NAME wandered into a lakeside tavern, hoping to get a few leads on adventure to be had. When that failed, he/she was faced with two traditional options: start a brawl or a drinking contest. Looking around at the friendly folk, NAME slapped some gold on the bar and challenged the fisherman sitting next to him/her. As NAME'ATTACKED' a couple of the sahuagin, and they all stabbed at him/her with their tridents, both sides exchanging wounding blows. When two of the vicious creatures fell, the remaining sahuagin dove back into the lake and disappeared, leaving NAME to nurse his/her wounds and collect a trinket.

Through the thick fog surrounding the lake, NAME spied a number of stocky humanoid creatures treading lightly toward the glow of a nearby village. Moving to intercept the creatures, NAME's nostrils were assailed by an overwhelmingly foul musk -- troglodytes. She/he chuckled, confident that she/he wouldn't have to try very hard to get rid of the reptilian raiding party.

(found in Cult of the Lizard God, encounter #1,2)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #5,6)

Holding his/her WEAPON at the ready, NAME drew himself/herself up with confidence and strode boldly in front of the troglodytes. "Turn and flee now", NAME flatly commanded them. The creatures paused, spears and clubs unsteadily held, and deferred to their robed leader who grunted a command through his skull-shaped mask. As the troglodyte nearest NAME raised its club, NAME slashed it, slaying it instantly, and bellowed "Now, leave!" The troglodytes nearly collapsed in on themselves as they turned and thundered away. NAME smiled to himself/herself and retrieved a few valuables from him/her erstwhile opponent. NAME charged toward the troglodytes, yelling and screaming his/her most menacing battle cries. As the troop of reptiles turned to face NAME, their robed leader hurled an arcane curse at him/her, slowing NAME's attack. The entire raiding party fell upon NAME, brutally battering and stabbing at him/her. Shaking off the magical effect, NAME slashed the troglodytes, whittling their numbers. The foul reptiles slowly withdrew, retreating into the fog. Bruised and bleeding, NAME collected a few trinkets.

NAME came across a strike force of ogre warriors filling their waterskins and preparing to assault a nearby village. Their leader strode forth and made terrible threats.

NAME took a deep breath and bellowed dire warnings of her own, threatening doom and destruction should the ogres proceed. A shouting match ensued that lasted several minutes, but NAME managed to intimidate the ogres into not only backing down, but also paying her a minor tribute. NAME drew his/her weapon and prepared for a nasty combat. When the dust cleared, NAME was bloodied and bruised but unbroken.

The beautiful lakeside scene was interrupted by screeching and the flapping of wings. A wyvern descended to attack NAME!

(found in Cult of the Lizard God, encounter #1)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #5)

NAME was stung by the wyvern's powerful tail, but managed to overcome the effects of the creature's venom. With skill and finesse, NAME and her/his trusty WEAPON TYPE prevailed. NAME was stung by the wyvern's powerful tail and felt the venom course through his system. All NAME could do was escape to shelter.
NAME came across an encampment of powerful-looking orc warriors on the shore of the lake. NAME wasn't about to let this menace stand.

(found in Cult of the Lizard God, encounter #1)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #5)

Though many, none of the orcs could stand before NAME's power. Like a thing out of legend, NAME smote two dozen orcs, sending the rest fleeing into the hills. These were no ordinary orcs -- their tactics and training proved more than NAME bargained for. NAME crushed many of their number, but was eventually driven back into the surrounding hills.

  • 52 XP

Wandering along the docks of a small lakeside village, NAME noticed a number of guardsmen arrayed alongside a large boat. Each of the guards had a handkerchief tied over his mouth and nose and the boat flew a yellow flag. "Plague ship, friend. Stay clear," one of the guards warned.

(found in Cult of the Lizard God, encounter #1,2)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #5,6)

When NAME inquired about the "plague," the guardsman enumerated several symptoms of a few common afflictions he/she was familiar with. He/She gathered ingredients from a few indigenous plants and mixed them with some herbs from his/her pack, creating a treatment for the melange of maladies. Confident in his/her knowledge, NAME boarded the ship and aided the crew, who thanked him/her and insisted he/she take payment for his/her kindness.
  • 160 XP
  • 86-140(max) gold
NAME listened to the guardsman describe the horrible affliction, taking a few steps back while he did. Searching his/her knowledge of such things, NAME eventually concluded that the "plague" sounded more like a combination of things that weren't deadly -- just contagious. NAME strode bravely onto the boat and searched it for valuables. When he/she was done his/her hands were full of gold and his/her skin was covered in boils that were both painful and contagious . . .though, to his/her delight, not deadly.
  • 11-20 damage
  • 55 XP

Walking along a cliff overlooking the lake, NAME noticed a dark shadow under the water. When he/she looked closer, he/she realized it was boat-shaped. Curious -- and feeling very brave -- he/she took a deep breath and dove into the deep water.

(found in Cult of the Lizard God, encounter #1,2)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #5,6)

NAME kicked vigorously, reaching the shipwreck with enough energy and air in reserve to poke around the gaping hole in the vessel's rotting hull. Sediment and muck quickly filled the water as everything NAME touched disintegrated -- except for a rusty iron box. NAME returned to the surface, made it to the beach, and was pleased by the results of his/her salvage mission. Despite the significant depth NAME's spectacular dive afforded him/her, the shipwreck seemed impossibly far away. He/She strained against the pressure of the water, trying to reach the wreck, but soon her/his lungs burned. He/She feared he/she would be unable to reach the surface in time. Struggling desperately, NAME finally burst through the surface. Coughing out water and gulping in the mist-filled air, NAME was ready to get back on dry land.
  • 11-21 damage
  • 49 XP
NAME wandered into a lakeside tavern, hoping to get a few leads on adventure to be had. When that failed, s/he was faced with two traditional options: start a brawl or a drinking contest. Looking around at the friendly folk, NAME slapped some gold on the bar and challenged the fisherman sitting next to her/him. The bartender grinned and poured two large flagons of the house ale, specially brewed with an unhealthy dose of venom of a type of poisonous fish common to the lake.

(found in Cult of the Lizard God, encounter #1,2)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #5,6)

NAME was a little surprised by the mouth-numbing quality of the acrid mug of ale, but grew accustomed to the effects and flavor readily enough. As the stack of emptied cups grew, so did the onlooking crowd's side-betting. He/She matched his/her sturdy companion, mug-for-mug, until the fisherman conceded, explaining that he needed to be able to stand aboard his boat in the morning. A cheer went up, coins slid in front of NAME, and the bartender cheerfully proffered her a tall glass of water.
  • 174 XP
  • 107-159 gold
NAME was nearly knocked off his/her barstool by the smell of the pungent ale, but the taste delivered the finishing blow. Suddenly NAME was standing on wobbly legs. As the first mug of ale wrenched NAME's stomach like a sailor tying a ridiculous knot, he/she took note of the tiny scars pockmarking her opponent's hands -- souvenirs from dozens of bites from the very same poisonous fish common to the lake. NAME admitted defeat, downed a pitcher of water, and rested his/her throbbing head on the counter.

NAME spied a small caravel tethered to a short pier and flying a pirate flag. When he/she got closer, the ship seemed to be vacated except for two rough-looking men pacing the deck. Figuring that the lake could use one less boatload of pirates, NAME sprung into action.

(found in Cult of the Lizard God, encounter #1)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #5)

In mere moments, NAME sprinted up a mooring rope, rod in hand, and made short work of the guards. He/She did a quick sweep of the small vessel, finding some interesting loot in the captain's cabin and some flammable oil in the ship's hold. NAME set the boat aflame, then adrift, and decided to not wait around for the pirate raiding party to return. NAME slipped while dashing up the mooring rope, losing his/her balance -- and the element of surprise. As he/she climbed the rest of the way aboard, one of the pirates shot him/her with a crossbow while the other rang a signal bell. By the time NAME finished taking down the guards, the pirate raiding party was running down the shore toward their ship. Not wanting to tangle with the whole crew at once, NAME dove overboard and swam to safety.

NAME came across a strange sight -- a damaged kolyarut, a mechanical being devoted to merciless justice. It approached NAME, its dark eyes inscrutable.

(found in Cult of the Lizard God, encounter #1)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #5)

The kolyarut drew its weapon and demanded to know the whereabouts of a local bandit lord. NAME took no aggressive action and slowly and carefully described, to the best of his/her knowledge, where his/her fortress lay. The kolyarut departed without a word, leaving several objects behind. The kolyarut drew its weapon, and demanded to know the whereabouts of a local bandit lord. Feeling threatened, NAME drew his/her weapon. Without a word, the construct attacked! NAME emerged victorious but injured.

Hiking atop a ruined stone wall near the lake, NAME paused to take in the panoramic view. The stark black face of a nearby cliff face struck him/her as familiar in some way -- linked to a story he/she remembered about an outpost . . . near a lake . . .

(found in Cult of the Lizard God, encounter #1,2)

Looking at the area around him/her, it hit him/her -- it wasn't an outpost, it was a stronghold owned by a superstitious merchant who believed in literally building his empire upon its previous success -- the cornerstones of every building he owned were filled with gold. NAME made a beeline for the end of the wall and hopped down. He/She chipped away at the ponderous stone block, eventually breaking through to the hollow center, which was tightly packed with still-shiny coins. NAME wracked his/her brain. There'd been a battle. Some sort of brigands, bandits, or pirates . . . or something. The whole place had been set aflame. Maybe. Or, was it a ship anchored in the lake? Yeah, that was it! The flagship of a merchant fleet that used chests of gold as ballast. NAME climbed off the wall and went swimming. He/She didn't find any gold but he/she did find a patch of pearl filled oysters.

While taking a refreshing swim in the lake, NAME found himself/herself suddenly sucked under the surface, with one of his/her legs trapped in the vice-like grip of a giant oyster.

Gripping each of the oyster's shells and bracing his/her free foot as best he/she could, NAME strained with all her/his might to force the curious mollusk open. His/Her herculean efforts to pry open the shells were doubly rewarded when he/she freed his/her leg from the oyster and had time to divest it of the fist-sized pearl it had nestled within. Short on breath, NAME struggled against the oyster's phenomenal grip. In sheer desperation, she/he managed to gain enough leverage to scrape her/his leg free of the powerful mollusk.

A curious shape halfway up the beach drew NAME closer, revealing itself to be an unconscious mermaid beached at high tide. Sun-baked and dehydrating, the beautiful creature was still bleeding from several nasty-looking bites.
  • Strength check with a difficulty of 18

(found in Cult of the Lizard God, encounter #1)

NAME cleaned the mermaid's wounds, and bound them as best he/she could, then gently dragged her closer to the edge of the lake. As he/she poured handfuls of water over the creature's parched scales and skin, the mermaid began to breathe more easily, and then regained consciousness. The mermaid smiled thankfully and transferred a pendant from her neck to NAME's before diving into the water and disappearing. NAME quickly dragged the mermaid back into the water, leaving a trail of desiccated scales along the beach. Revived by the water, the poor creature awoke in a panic and splashed away from NAME and into the depths, leaving a thin plume of scarlet in her wake. NAME collected the valuable scales.

NAME noticed a small cave, barely above the water level. He/She wondered if it might be the entrance to a cave network carved a long time ago by a now-dried up river. Regardless, the lure of exploration and the possibility of discovering hidden treasure compelled her to borrow a small rowboat and take a look.
  • Wisdom check with a difficulty of 19

(found in Cult of the Lizard God, encounter #1,2)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #5,6)

The small cave had only one immediately conspicuous feature -- a small, leather bag pressed into the soft clay of the back wall. Tugging the jingly pouch free, NAME noticed his/her boat was being pushed by a current flowing from under the mud-caked wall. He/She poked at the soft earth with an oar, and removed enough dirt to squeeze through. The humid grotto that laid beyond was lit dimly by a shaft of light pouring in, along with a thin flow of water, from the high ceiling. The sunlight glistened off a scattered pile of loose coins burst from their pouches and covering a narrow ledge. As NAME gathered the loot, he/she deduced it had been dumped by thieves for later retrieval. Whistling a jaunty tune, NAME paddled his/her way back outside.
  • 158 XP
  • 87-137 gold
Inside the tiny cave, NAME bumped around for a bit before his/her rowboat thumped into the back wall. A wet thud drew his/her attention to the thick clay covering the natural rock. Curious, he/she looked closer and noticed that the clay had clearly been smeared there in order to hold a small pouch of gold pressed into its surface. Feeling quite clever, NAME dropped the clinking pouch into her own, and guided the rowboat home.

Wandering along the rocky shore, NAME noticed a pile of the white, speckly stones stacked in a way that surely couldn't have happened by any natural means.
  • Wisdom check with a difficulty of 19

(found in Cult of the Lizard God, encounter #1)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #5)

As NAME approached the small cairn, he/she spotted an even more out-of-place object half buried in the sandy earth twenty feet away -- a black, melon-sized rock that belonged nowhere near the lake. Surmising the tiny pyramid was a decoy and the black rock was the true marker, NAME started digging for treasure. A few feet down, his/her assumptions and effort were rewarded with a small chest filled with gold.
  • 163 XP
  • 79-128 gold
Kicking over the stack of stones and scooping away handfuls of loose soil, it wasn't long before NAME discovered a stone-lined pocket filled with a handful of coins. Chuckling at the dull wit of pirates and their ilk, NAME continued down the beach, jingling his/her coins and looking for more stony pyramids.
