NAME heard hissing whispers around the bend and crept up to peer around the corner. There stood three gray-skinned, tattooed humans in dark clothing -- ar-kai! The tower of darkness was their doing. No doubt they intended some evil. Even as the thought crossed NAME's mind, he/she heard a snippet of their conversation, ". . . seems to be visible to those outside the castle. It is an unforeseen consequence to the strengthening magic that brings our fortress into this world."

Encounter 8: Story Encounter Text

Success Results | Failure Results |
At last, NAME discovered two great black doors that looked nothing like the rest of the castle. As he/she approached them, a wave of nausea and dizziness overcame him/her.
| |
Fighting against the sensation, NAME hurled him/herself forward and pushed through the doors into a dark catacomb. It wasn't the castle tower NAME was expecting, but the sickness had passed and there was an unlocked treasure chest.
|
NAME staggered under the magic of the doors, turning this way and that. It felt like her/his insides were twisting within her/his body. Finally, NAME slumped against the black doors, feebly pressing against them and sliding heavily to the ground in the narrow gap between them. Once her/his head was through the doors, NAME started to feel better, and she/he crawled into the dungeon-like corridor beyond.

Encounter 17: Final Encounter Text

Success Results | Failure Results |
NAME entered a huge chamber from a balcony level. Below, numerous shadar-kai witches channeled shadowy energy into a huge stone block floating high above the floor. It was one of the cornerstones of the castle! There were too many for NAME to fight, but the invasion needed to be stopped.
Knowing it might mean his/her end, NAME hopped boldly upon the balcony rail and shouted down to the witches, "Cease your foul spells! We have discovered your invasion plans, and even now the king's knights are slaughtering your kind. If you have any wits about you at all, you'd flee!" Shocked by NAME's sudden and bold entrance, the witches stopped spellcasting and the cornerstone crashed through the floor, taking the witches with it. With a sickening spin, the Tower of Darkness vanished, leaving NAME standing on the roof of the castle.
|
Knowing it might mean her/his end, NAME called down to the witches, "Stop your spellcasting. The guards are coming. I . . . I just called them." Some of the witches glanced up at NAME and laughed. With a wave of one witch's hand, the floor vanished from beneath NAME, and she/he fell through darkness to land with bone-crushing force outside the castle. NAME was lucky to be alive. She/he gathered up some valuables that had also fallen and retreated home.
